Lion's Gate Portal - Myth, Magic and Meaning
🦁 Lion’s Gate Portal is August 8th each year — right?
August 8 — 8/8 — has become one of the most popular dates of the year in the spiritual community.
You’ll hear that a cosmic “portal” opens, that Sirius aligns with Earth and Orion, and that powerful energies arrive for manifestation, abundance and awakening.
I love the symbolism — but as an astrologer, I also like separating symbolism from astronomy.
There really is an ancient and fascinating connection to Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky. The ancient Egyptians closely observed the annual reappearance of Sirius and associated it with their New Year and the life-giving flooding of the Nile — making Sirius a beautiful symbol of renewal, fertility and abundance.
But August 8 itself is not a special astronomical alignment — nor is Lion’s Gate a traditional astrological event. Sirius does not suddenly move closer to Earth on 8/8, and its annual heliacal rising does not occur on the same date everywhere in the world.
So why August 8?
This is where I think numerology deserves much more of the credit. In numerology, 8 is traditionally associated with power, achievement, abundance, manifestation and bringing something into material form. Its shape even resembles the infinity symbol — suggesting an ongoing flow between the spiritual and material worlds.
On 8/8, that symbolism is doubled.
Add to that the fact that the Sun is traveling through Leo — the sign of the heart, courage, creativity, self-expression and the willingness to shine — and you can see how 8/8 developed into such a compelling spiritual date.
Does the fact that Lion’s Gate is a modern tradition make it meaningless? Not to me.
I think there is something wonderful about choosing a day like 8/8 to stop and ask:
✨ What does my heart really want?
✨ Where am I ready to be braver?
✨ What am I ready to create, manifest or bring more fully into my life?
Maybe the “portal” isn’t something that suddenly opens somewhere in the heavens.
Maybe we are the ones opening. 🦁✨
So enjoy your Lion’s Gate. Set an intention. Listen to your heart. Dream a little bigger.
And remember: symbolism can be powerful without having to be astronomy.
